In 1809, the town of Oella, named for the first woman to spin cotton in America, was established along the Patapsco River. Many homes were constructed in town and close by by tradesmen employed by the mills working along the river and railroad. Union Manufacturing Company, the first textile company to be chartered by the state of Maryland was a busy local employer until the 1970s. The factory is gone now due to the introduction of man made fabrics. The mill was closed in 1972, but the homes of Old Ellicott City and Oella offer living examples of life in 19th Century America.
